Harvard Crimson Article

I didn't see this article in the Harvard Crimson until after Saturday's race, so I'm a bit late with it. It's a good article on the Radcliffe program that describes a team on the rise. Oddly, it almost presages Saturday's result. The article also confirms that Radcliffe has been rowing a freshman in its V8, which had been rumored since the start of the season.

Is rowing with a freshman in the boat supposed to be some sort of big feat to have accomplished? Most of the smaller teams (bucknell, UCF, Dayton, Ohio) row with at the least one freshman in their boats every year.

I don't know about the "feat" thing, but if one looks at the "Boatings and Results" section of the Radcliffe LW rowing website, the circulation of mere rumors concerning a rowing freshman are unnecessary. That section clearly shows that, not only is a freshman rowing in Radcliffe's varsity boat, she's stroking it. And, no, I'm not her mother!

Well, I don't think the point is that it is necessarily so unusual in general, but that it is unusual in the top ranked boat in the country. Of the other boats you mention, while some of the fastest boats in the country, the closest is 22 seconds from Radcliffe, while the next closest is 41 seconds.

On a similar subject, the issue of freshmen in general, and freshmen eights in particular, was addressed in a reader email, which will be the subject of a future post.

Does anyone other than Radcliffe else have freshmen in the v8 ?
